The Meaning Behind

The Name.

Queen Margherita Pizza is named after Margherita Maria Teresa Giovanna, the Queen consort of Italy during the reign of King Umberto. As the story goes, for a royal visit to the city of Naples in 1889, a local pizza maker named Raffaele Esposito made three different pizzas. The Queen's favourite was the one representing the Italian flag with green basil leaves, white mozzarella cheese and red tomato sauce. From then on, it was known as Pizza Margherita.
